Claude, Gemini or ChatGPT This Week: What the Latest News Means for Your Small Business

Three of the biggest AI assistants made small business news in the last few days, and each one is aiming at a different kind of owner. Anthropic launched Claude Duet on October 21, 2026. Google rolled out a new Gemini hub for small businesses on October 20. OpenAI said on October 21 that ChatGPT Ads now reach 89 countries. Here is what each one means for your business, with a plain recommendation at the end.

This is not a general buyer's guide. If you want that, read our earlier post, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini? How to Choose the Right AI Assistant for You: https://www.netnerds.com/post/chatgpt-claude-or-gemini-how-to-choose-the-right-ai-assistant-for-you. This post only covers what is new this week.

Claude: a proactive agent, a Zillow connector and a lesson in approvals

According to MacRumors on October 21, 2026, Anthropic introduced Claude Duet, a proactive agent that "reaches out before you ask." It connects to your apps, suggests things that need your attention and completes tasks in the cloud. MacRumors reports that Anthropic built Duet for professionals and small business owners with too much to track. Our full write-up is here: https://www.netnerds.com/post/claude-duet-is-here-anthropic-s-proactive-ai-agent-that-reaches-out-before-you-ask

MacRumors says Duet sends a short brief each morning on important items from your connected apps, then checks those apps every few hours and alerts you when something needs attention. It asks for your approval before actions such as sending a message, making a payment, signing a document or deleting a file.

The catch is access. Per MacRumors, Duet is a research preview, access is granted through a waitlist, and it is limited to Pro and Max subscribers in the United States. It works on the web or in a standalone iOS app, and it uses your existing Claude plan limits, so its background checks count toward them.

Claude also gained a Zillow connector. Unite.AI reported on October 19, 2026 that Zillow's experience is now available inside Claude, with listings, interactive maps, home value estimates and affordability tools, plus a path to request a tour, reach an agent or explore financing. The same report notes Zillow is already in ChatGPT and, for rentals, in Gemini, so this is not exclusive to Claude. One more Claude item is worth your attention. Fortune reported on October 19, 2026 that Anthropic's study of its own employees found 80 percent of the elapsed time in Claude sessions was spent with agents waiting on a human. Fortune also cautions that Anthropic is not a typical company. The practical lesson for you is to decide which tasks need your approval before you hand over more work. We covered it here: https://www.netnerds.com/post/an-army-of-claudes-what-anthropic-s-own-workplace-study-says-about-managing-ai-agents

Who it helps: US owners who already pay for Claude and feel buried in email, follow-ups and small admin jobs. CNBC also notes that Anthropic has pledged to keep Claude ad free.

Gemini: a business hub built around the tools you already use

Google's announcement on October 20, 2026 is the most small business focused of the three. Google says tens of millions of small business owners already use Gemini, and it introduced a new business landing page where owners can build their brand, analyze finances and understand customer insights in one place.

According to the Google blog, you can connect Gemini to Google Business Profile, Google Ads and Google Workspace, as well as Adobe, Canva, Dropbox, Shopify, Wix, Zoho and Xero. You can also upload your website, brand kit, fonts or color palettes so Gemini keeps your visual style when it creates marketing images. Google also says Gemini can turn messy spreadsheets, receipts and purchase records into clear financial graphics and interactive models. Google says the landing page, the marketing and finance skills and the new connected apps are beginning to roll out in the coming days globally for all Gemini app users. The announcement does not list a price or a plan requirement, so check what your own account shows before you count on it.

Chrome is also getting Gemini features. PCWorld reported on October 21, 2026 that Chrome 156 adds a feature that lets you ask Gemini about the video or audio playing in your tab, though it is rolling out gradually: https://www.netnerds.com/post/chrome-156-lets-you-ask-gemini-about-the-video-you-are-watching. XenoSpectrum reported the same day on new Gemini-based scam warnings in Chrome's Enhanced Protection setting: https://www.netnerds.com/post/chrome-uses-gemini-to-spot-scams-new-warnings-for-suspicious-sites-and-dangerous-copied-commands

Who it helps: owners who already live in Google Workspace, Google Business Profile or Shopify and Wix, and who want help with marketing visuals and bookkeeping questions.

ChatGPT: the news is advertising, not a new assistant feature

OpenAI announced on October 21, 2026 that ChatGPT Ads is expanding to 26 more countries, for a total of 89. CNBC reports that ads appear for Free and Go users, and OpenAI says Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions remain ad free. OpenAI says more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since ads launched just over eight months ago. PPC Land points out that this figure is cumulative, so it does not tell you how many advertisers are active today.

OpenAI says advertisers can buy through technology partners or self-service access in Ads Manager. It also says conversations are kept private from advertisers, ads are clearly labeled and separate from answers, and advertising does not influence what ChatGPT says. Those are the company's own statements. PPC Land notes the announcement includes no figures on spend, prices or results. Our breakdown: https://www.netnerds.com/post/chatgpt-ads-now-reach-89-countries-what-small-businesses-should-know

There was also a ChatGPT item for developers. Google Cloud announced on October 21, 2026 that OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers in its Model Garden. That is not something most small businesses can use today, but it shows rivals sharing a shelf: https://www.netnerds.com/post/openai-models-are-coming-to-google-cloud-why-rivals-are-now-sharing-a-shelf

Who it helps: owners who want to be found by customers who ask an AI for recommendations, and anyone who wants to test a new kind of advertising with a small budget.

The three side by side

Claude: Duet (research preview, waitlist, US Pro and Max only), Zillow connector, approvals matter. Best for owners drowning in email and follow-ups. Ads: Anthropic has pledged to keep Claude ad free.

Gemini: new business hub, connected apps, brand visuals, financial summaries, rolling out in the coming days to all Gemini app users. Best for owners who run marketing and books through Google, Shopify or Wix tools. Pricing: not stated in the announcement.

ChatGPT: ads in 89 countries on Free and Go plans, Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad free. Best for owners who want to advertise where customers ask questions. Results data: not published in the announcement.

Which one should you pick?

If your problem is a flooded inbox and endless follow-ups, and you are in the US on a Pro or Max plan, join the Claude Duet waitlist and set clear approval rules before you give it access to anything involving money or customers.

If your problem is marketing images, bookkeeping questions and juggling business tools, start with the new Gemini business hub once it appears in your account, and connect only the apps you actually use.

If your problem is getting new customers, watch ChatGPT Ads. Start with a small budget, track real calls, bookings and sales, and avoid long commitments until you see results. If you are a real estate agent or broker, the Zillow connector is worth a look in whichever assistant you already use.

If you are not sure, pick one assistant, give it one real task for a week and see whether it saves you time. Do not pay for three tools at once.
