Claude Duet Is Here: Anthropic's Proactive AI Agent That Reaches Out Before You Ask

On October 21, 2026, Anthropic introduced Claude Duet, a new AI agent that does something most chatbots do not: it reaches out to you before you ask. MacRumors reported the launch the same day and described Duet as Anthropic's answer to Meta's Muse agent and OpenAI's Dots agent. If you run a small business, or you simply have too much to keep track of, this one is worth understanding.
What is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is a standalone product, separate from the regular Claude chat. It connects to the apps you already use and points out things that need your attention. Instead of waiting for you to type a question, it sends a short brief each morning covering the important items from your connected apps. Then it checks those apps every few hours and sends an alert when something needs a look.
Anthropic says it built Duet for professionals and small business owners who have too much to track. That is a very familiar group. Think of the owner who starts the day with a crowded inbox, a few calendar changes and a list of follow-ups that never quite gets finished.
What can it actually do?
According to MacRumors, Duet can complete simple administrative tasks and also take on more complex jobs, such as building web apps. It works in the cloud, so it does not need local access to your computer. Like Dots and Muse, it has a virtual machine with its own browser, which lets it work through tasks the way a person sitting at a computer would.
Duet is built around Anthropic's Opus 5.5 model. It also carries over the memory, skills and connected apps from your existing Claude account, so there is not much setup involved. Everything happens in one ongoing thread instead of a pile of separate conversations, which makes it feel more like working with an assistant who remembers yesterday.
Approval comes before anything important
This is the part that matters most for safety. While Duet works on its own, it asks for your approval before it takes actions like sending a message, making a payment, signing a document or deleting a file. In plain English, it can prepare the work, but you still press the button on the risky steps.
Anthropic also says Duet does not see your passwords or logins when you give it access to your accounts. MacRumors reports that it has a dedicated classifier and a safety system prompt that check each message and guard against leaks of sensitive information.
Who can use it today
Duet is in a research preview right now, and access is granted through a waitlist. It is limited to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, and you can use it on the web or in a standalone Duet app for iPhone.
One detail to plan for: Duet uses your existing Claude plan limits, and its background checks count toward them. If you already run close to your limits, an agent that checks your apps every few hours could use them up faster than you expect.
What this means for small business owners
The big shift here is from asking to being told. Most AI tools wait for a prompt. Duet starts the conversation. For a busy owner, a morning brief that says which customer emails are waiting, what is on the calendar and what needs a decision can save the first half hour of the day.
There are also reasons to be careful. Not everyone wants an agent watching their accounts all day. Some readers of the MacRumors story said the idea of proactive agents felt exhausting rather than helpful, and that is a fair reaction. Before you connect anything, decide which apps you are comfortable sharing, and keep the approval step in place for anything involving money or signatures.
A simple way to test it: start with one low-risk app, such as your calendar. Watch what the daily brief gets right and wrong for a week, and only then add email or files. That keeps you in control while you learn what the agent is good at.
The bigger picture
Duet joins a fast-growing group of always-on agents. Over the last few weeks, OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse have pushed the same idea, and now Anthropic has entered the race. For everyday users, the competition is good news, because it pushes every company to improve safety, pricing and ease of use. It also means the choices are getting harder, and it helps to have someone who can explain which tool fits your situation.
